They cluster low and soft, brushed rather than struck, more pulse than rhythm. They keep time the way a clock keeps time in an empty room: steadily, indifferently, for nobody.

Eight hundred rings in five minutes, a ring for every attack, which is why this portrait glows the way it does. The playing never stops arriving, so the weave never opens. Almost never; hold that thought.

The opening rings are the brightest thing in the picture. The spectral centre of that first stretch sits near 6,665 hertz, which is the glassy top of hearing, cymbal air and pick attack, the water’s lit surface. Then the descent begins and the light starts to fail, section by section, settling into the middle register and staying there, bright enough to see by while the voice enters, your eyes, they turn me, and the guitars keep their patient cycling. It keeps its tonic from the cliff’s edge to the escape, keeps its dynamics inside a three-decibel band, flat as still water, and takes you down anyway, because the darkness it uses is the one that’s actually in deep water: the light failing, register by register, until you touch bottom and turn, blind, toward the surface. Look at the color. The body of the image is jade and teal, ring after ring of it, and jade is E, the home key, the tonic this song is bolted to. The data makes it almost comic in its insistence: of eighteen sections, E is the dominant pitch in fourteen of them. The pedal is floored. The key never leaves.

That is the whole ache of the song rendered in geometry. Oh, someday girl I don’t know when we’re gonna get to that place, the line admits the destination is unreachable, and the rings agree. They lean. The harmony pulls off-axis to about half its possible drift at the strongest pull, enough to feel the wanting, never enough to break concentricity.
